Just got off of a ustream live broadcast with Bob The Teacher. He was testing out the ustream interface and whatnot. He really didn’t have anything planned, so it was very much just what I picture a master mind session to be like. Everyone was “shooting from the hips” and just talking in general about what they do and how they do what they do.

Despite the informal nature of the session, and the technical difficulties that we had at the beginning there was some good advice given out.

My favorite piece of advice, came when another attendee asked Bob to tell us how he got started.

Bob talked about his first few ventures in marketing and about his evolution into “Bob The Teacher.” I won’t rehash the story here. He tells the story much better than I ever could. In any case, Bob tells of how he was getting mentored by a bunch of people in his early days and one of those folks gave him some great advice. The gold nugget, as I recall, went something like this:

Don’t chase after every money making opportunity out there. Instead, focus on your own core strengths and how you can use those strengths to help people.

So instead of chasing after Adsense riches, or after the latest and greatest money making plan out there, focus on your own unique experiences.

Focus on how your own life experiences have made you who you are and then use that to help people.

For Bob, it was that he was or is rather, a teacher.

He had been a teacher for 10 years, and so he had a lot of experience teaching and helping people learn. Eventually, he reached the point where he came to realize what his strengths are and rather than fight them, or act contrary to them, he opted to use them to help people.

It’s brilliant in its simplicity.

Do what you love, and you’ll never work another day in your life.

The cherry on top, is that you get to help people reach their goals by doing what you love to do. That is not only good marketing advice, but good advice in general.

A simply brilliant plan.

I’m going to use what I’ve learned from Bob’s Teleseminar secrets training to do just that.  Here’s a link to a free sample of the training.

No, not by Squidoo, but from Associated Content.

It wasn’t a lot of money, but it was some. The thing is, that I put in the work to create the articles a couple of months ago, and I got paid for work that I had already done. I believe that is defined as passive income. I call it, awesome income.

We’ll see if this happens, but apparently, the longer the articles stay live, the more views they get, the more money I get. I’ll keep you guys posted.

If I could only repeat this on Squidoo and make me some money from affiliate sales etc. over there…

Ooh, I know, I’ll use one of my free tools that I’ve posted about before for some content and topic ideas.

I wrote that review about Squidoo not being worth the hassle yesterday, or maybe it was just after midnight when it finally went “live.” In any case, when I checked my email this morning, this was waiting for me in my inbox:

Thanks for trying Squidoo.

Alas, it’s not automatic. Some people are making thousands of dollars a month from it, but it’s related to effort. Hacking around a little just doesn’t work… that’s true everywhere, not just on Squidoo.

Check out this page for free ebooks that won’t cost a dime: http://www.squidoo.com/theanswerdeck/hq

As for your royalty statements, the reports are delayed because our income is delayed… advertisers and affiliates pay six or eight weeks after the money is earned.

Good luck to you!

PS “sucks” is a pretty strong term, no?

Seth Godin
Squidoo LLC

If y’all know anything about Squidoo, you know who Seth Godin is.

What follows here, is an open letter to Mr. Godin.

I am extremely humbled that you found my blog, and that you took the time to comment and write me about what I said. I especially appreciate that rather than attack me, you very tactfully and directly addressed the points that I was making. Thank you very much for the links and for the information about the royalty payments.

Mr. Godin, you are absolutely right. Piddling around is not going to get any results. Actually, let me rephrase that. The kinds of results that I was getting, are the kinds of results that you get when you just piddle around or you are just “hacking around a little.”

Sir, you don’t know me personally, but you’ve struck a chord within me with that statement.

Anything that is worth achieving, takes work. I did not work as diligently as I could have on my Squidoo lenses. Alas, there’s the rub. Instant gratification is not to be had.

“Sucks” is indeed a strong term, and it is not the most appropriate term either.

Here’s my new review:

Squidoo, like anything else in life, takes work. Specially if you want to be successful at it. You only get back, what you put in it. Don’t believe the people that want to tell you otherwise.

P.S.

I did ask Mr. Godin if I could reprint the text of his email, but I did not tell him what I was writing beforehand. I just thought I’d mention that.

P.P.S.

Why are my captchas still broken????

My second post of the day, is another product review.

This one is about Twitter.

Anyone that has used the tool, has been able to seen the great potential of it.  Anyone that has used the tool, has also seen how much of a “tool” this thing is.  It has great potential, but is seriously plagued by stability issues.  Whatever the root cause of the problems, they need to get resolved, and quickly.

Twitter is constantly down, and they constantly turn off the best features of the application.  Friendfeed on the other hand, never goes down.  I have yet to have a problem logging on to friendfeed or using any of their features, once I figure out how to use them.

I’m switching over to friendfeed, and twitter be darned to heck.

To heck I say!

Now, if I can just figure out how to get my friendfeed feed to show up in the sidebar, does anyone have any ideas?

There’s a long answer and a short answer to this question. The short answer, in my opinion, is no. the long answer follows.

First, my experience with Squidoo is less than stellar. I have several lenses, none of which get a lot of traffic. I’ve played around with them, added content, removed content, done some keyword research, written lenses based on my research, and have gotten bubkus in traffic.

Maybe I’m missing something? Maybe I need to buy one of those guides that promise to teach you everything that you need to know about Squidoo and whatnot. I just don’t think that it’s worth the hassle anymore. Maybe at some point in the past it was worth it, but not anymore.

I’d be more inclined to buying a guide or something like that if I could figure out how to update my royalty stats. Right now, my stats are stuck to showing the stats for the month of April 2008, and my royalty earnings are $0.42. That’s 42 cents for the month of April, and nothing else since then. I don’t know if I just haven’t earned anything else or if it just hasn’t updated since then. In either case, how do I trust that they’re going to pay me my money?

So, after a good 3 month trial, I’m prepared to say that Squidoo is just not worth the hassle. I may or may not continue posting content to my existing lenses, or maybe I’ll come up with something that will earn me some royalty money or affiliate commissions or I may not.

I like the concept of Squidoo, I just haven’t seen any money come my way thanks to Squidoo, or traffic diverted to my funnel from Squidoo. What do y’all think?
